neologism: High Definition TV

The movie industry switched to the wide screen format, not knowing what they had discovered. In the early 80's the industry was introduced to a high def TV system that had the same clarity as 35 mm film. PBS was the first television station to use high def in 1988 during a documentary of Dale Chihuly and his glassblowing tour. The Federal Communications Commission suggested competing groups join forces and as a result, in 1996 the Advanced Television Systems Committee was formed.
