etymology: dibs

The word was first recorded in print in 1932 in American Speech. Interestingly, British children use the term "bags" derived from a public school slang term. The most common and accepted history of this word comes from a game with many other names (jacks, fivestones, knucklebones etc). The word comes from the term dibstones, a term which means terminal murkiness. However, how the expression came to be used as a way to claim priority is dibstones, forever murky and unclear.
