Window is a word that has its roots in the early 13th century. It is derived from "wind eye," from "wind" +
auga "eye." It was later replaced with "eye-hole," and
"eye-door." It was originally an unglazed hole in a roof, with the current term used
to describe the glass version forming in Germany, and English used
fenester as a parallel word until the mid 16th century.
